Lazio hosted Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the 2023/2024 Champions League, on Thursday (15/2/2024). The match between Lazio and Bayern at the Olimpico ended with a score of 1-0.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, playing with ten men after Dayot Upamecano received a red card in the 67th minute. Maurizio Sarri’s side secured a narrow victory thanks to Ciro Immobile’s penalty goal in the 69th minute.

Once again, Lazio only managed to score one goal against the German representatives. However, this time their lone goal brought about a different feeling.

 

The meeting at the Olimpico was the third encounter between Lazio and Bayern.

Their two previous meetings also took place in the Champions League Round of 16, during the 2020/2021 season. Back then, Lazio suffered defeat twice.

During that season, Lazio was still under the management of Simone Inzaghi, while Bayern was led by Hansi Flick.

On both occasions, Lazio managed to score one goal against Bayern, but the outcomes were bitter for them. Lazio lost 1-4 in the first leg at home, then 1-2 in the second leg in Germany.

That season, Lazio scored one goal but lost 1-4 in Italy. Subsequently, Lazio scored another goal but lost 1-2 in Germany.

In this encounter, once again, Lazio only managed to score one goal against Bayern, but the outcome was different. This time, Lazio emerged as the winner.

This 1-0 victory could serve as a good momentum for Lazio heading into the second leg duel in Germany in early March 2024.
